Brief Introduction of Norman Bethune Health Science Center
Norman Bethune Health Science Center of Jilin University was founded in 1939. In 1978, it resumed its former name of Norman Bethune University of Medical Sciences. In 2000, combined with the former Jilin University, Jilin Polytechnical University, Changchun University of Science and Technology and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications, it became new Jilin University.
Norman Bethune Health Science Center has 5 colleges, namely School of Basic Medicine，School of Public Health，School of Pharmaceutical Science, School of Nursing, Clinical Medical School, 4 affiliated hospitals, namely 1st Hospital of Jilin University, 2nd Hospital of Jilin University, China-Japan Union Hospital of Jilin University and Hospital of Stomatology, one Research Laboratory of Regenerative Science.
Full-time undergraduate programs include Clinical Medicine, Dental Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Radiology, Information Management and System Program (medicine), Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, Bioengineering, Nursing, Physiotherapy in Rehabilitation Sciences. Currently there are 8953 students, among them there are 4656 undergraduate students and 4297 postgraduate students.
Norman Bethune Health Science Center has 8276permanent staff members, 2175 of whom are teachers. The center has 787 professors, 742 associate professors. Norman Bethune Health Science Center has 305 doctoral supervisors, 1393 master supervisors, 5 double-hired academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2members of discipline appraisal group of Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council,4 staff from Program, 2 innovation groups of Scholars Program, 2 chief scientists of the Nation’s 973 Program (including important scientific research programs), 3 Scholars and Innovation Group Development Program groups, 1 winner of National Distinguished Youth Fund, and 13 Changbai Mountain Scholars of Jilin Province.
Norman Bethune Health Science Center now has one National Famous Teachering Award winner, one National Excellent Teaching Group and four Provincial Famous Teaching Award winners. The center also has four courses of National Quality Course Award, 16 courses of Provincial Quality Courses Award, 4 scientific awards of National level, 78 educational awards of provincial and ministerial level, 6 Tang Aoqing Distinguished Professors. It also has 16 moving stations of scientific research and 6 centers for post-doctoral studies.It is entitled to grantdoctoral degree of 7 first-level disciplines and 58 second-level disciplines, master’s degree of61 disciplines. It has 2 national-level key disciplines and majors, 7 key and characteristic majors of Jilin province and 21 other key disciplines and specialties of ministerial and provincial level.
Norman Bethune Health Science Center has a total number of 77high-level laboratories and research centers ,including national and local joint engineering laboratories, key laboratories approved by the Ministry of Education, key laboratories of Ministry of Health, International Cooperation Base of Science and Technology approved by the Ministry of Science of Technology, third-level laboratories of National Administration Bureau of Traditional Chinese Medicine, key laboratories of provincial level as well as engineering centers. The ESI global ranking of Clinical medicine and Pharmacology and Toxicology is among the top 1%.
Norman Bethune Health Science Center now has four affiliated hospitals with the function of medical treatment, education, scientific research, prevention, health care and recovery. These four affiliated hospitals, including three comprehensive hospitals and one stomatological hospital, all reach the 3A standard.
Norman Bethune Health Science Center always values the importance of international cooperation. We have already built a long-term academic exchange with academies and groups from more than 30 counties and regions, namely Japan, Canada, US, England, Sweden and Hong Kong. Nowadays, Norman Bethune Health Science Center has 526 international students from 45 countries, including undergraduates, master’s and doctoral students, making us the teaching department with the largest international student scale in Jilin University. The cultivation pattern with multi-levels has been established.
